The 1st House is the energy field of the self.  It indicates how you experience being you.  The sign on the cusp is called your Rising Sign.  Some astrologers argue that it is the most important point in the whole chart.  It is definitely more defining than the Sun or Moon in terms of appearance.  The Sun was transiting through its sign for thirty days during the month of your birth.  Millions of kids have the same Sun sign as they were born during the same year. The Moon was only transiting its sign for two and a half days during the time of your birth, so it describes you even more as an individual apart from your peers who also came in with the same Sun and Moon sign.  Your character will be very similar to these people if you were to meet them.  The Rising Sign was ascending for a mere two hours and so presents an even more personal component in your overall make up.

I like to think of the Moon as your soul essence, the Sun as your core identity, and the Rising Sign as the template or filter that all the dimensions of consciousness shine through.  The Rising Sign as your physical embodiment is your doorway to experience and demarcates the fine line between your inner and outer worlds.  Think of the Ascendant as the initiation point of your human experience.  If there is no you, then there can be no experience.  Without a Rising Sign you wouldn’t have embodied that moment of birth.  Jung used the term Persona to describe the face, body, and character a person embodies.  The term was derived from an ancient Etruscan word “phersu,” which meant mask.  Psychology defines the persona as the role a person assumes in order to display his or her conscious intentions to the world and to himself.  Physically, the Ascendant is the point that is rising in the east at the moment you took that first defining breath.  As such, it describes the way you dawn on others.  It is the physical, mental, and spiritual vehicle that the soul utilizes to express itself in life.  If the soul were a musician, then the Ascendant would be its instrument.

Planets in the 1st House indicate the forces of consciousness that you are working through to discover and live your authentic personality.  Rising planets are usually stronger in terms of chart influence.  They color your behavior as well as the way you appear.  The best way to interpret a planet in the first house is to associate it with the sign it governs and imagine it Rising as well.  For example, if Leo is Rising and Saturn is in the 1st House, then that person’s character will be expressed as kind of a Leo/Capricorn mix, further modified by the Sun, since the Sun governs Leo.  The 1st House defines the shape of your auric essence, what people feel when they first meet you.  The planet or planets that govern the Rising Sign were once called Lords of the Chart.  In poetic astrology, I call the classical planet that governs the Rising Sign the chart focalizer.  This planet focuses your body and behavior into being, affecting the way you look, act, and feel.  Its chart position by sign, house, and aspect will invariably color the Ascendant.

Imagine that all the energies and potentials of the birth chart are being expressed through the Ascendant.  It is the mask you wear to present yourself and all that lies within to the world.  However, it’s more than just a simple mask.  It reveals the way you will create your identity, express consciousness, initiate life energy, illuminate your essence, and activate vitality.  it is essential to your survival and existence as a human being.  Spiritual paths might call it the vehicle for this incarnation.  It is a gateway through which consciousness projects the inner configuration of planetary energies, establishing your unique self.

The 1st House and 7th House form a naturally polarity called the Axis of Life.  In truth, no house or field of life experience can be studied as an isolated entity because of the principle of experiential polarization.  Your individual persona (1st House) will be reflected in the way you relate to others (7th House), just as the results of your companionships will add to or diminish your individual character.  Try to imagine the houses not as isolated zones, but as interconnected polarity fields describing the sum of your experiential possibilities.  In this section we’ll describe the Sun in the twelve houses.  Later we’ll explore what the various signs are like when they are found rising.
